History
The Indian Institute of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare (IIAFW) traces its roots to India’s agricultural development initiatives. The foundation of India’s modern agricultural research system began in 1905, when organized agricultural education and research were formally introduced in New Delhi. Over the years, the institute expanded its role to support farmers, improve crop production, and guide agricultural innovation in India.
The organization contributed significantly during the Green Revolution, which transformed India from a food-deficit nation to a food-surplus country. With continuous advancement in research, the institute gradually developed specialized departments in fields such as agronomy, horticulture, aquaculture, sericulture, mariculture, and fisheries.
Today, the institute continues to work as a guiding body for agricultural research, farmer welfare, and educational development in India. It collaborates with national research centers, agricultural universities, Krishi Vigyan Kendras (KVKs), and district agricultural laboratories to strengthen the agricultural ecosystem across the country.
